Veteran aces and new names
Rally-marathon Silk Way 2010 1 2 stages. After the first day of the race four crews of KAMAZ have taken the four first positions in the truck class. On Saturday, on the first day of the race, the participants of the Dakar series rally ran the first 86 kilometers of the distance on Luzhskoy tank firing ground and further to the town of Staraya Russa. The route was very unusual some stages looked similar to classical rallies, some of them resembled special stages of Dakar. On the way there were logs, run-down bridges, forest-cuttings and quick sands. An accident of Pep Vila Rocas crew from Gerard De Rooys team became a great disappointment for spectators. He overthrew his MAN having greatly damaged the vehicle and therefore lost more than 3 hours. Vladimir Chagin stopped on the distance in order to help his crashed rival and continued the race only after he had made sure that the Spaniards crew hadnt been injured. The veteran racers of the KAMAZ-master team immediately took the reins of power in their hands. Three main crews of the KAMAZ-master team started struggling from the first meters. Vladimir Chagin showed the best time of the day having left his teammate Firdaus Kabirov behind he came 1 minute 44 seconds later; Ilghizar Mardeev came fourth following Edward Nikolaev. Andrey Karghinov came seventh, and Ayrat Mardeev ranked eleventh. Andery Leontiev, a Moscow journalist, set himself a task not to damage his KAMAZ and to get used to the difficult route, and he coped with his task having taken the thirteenth place. After the second day of Silk Way 2010, new names appeared in the overall list of winners on stages of the Dakar series race. The second stage passed not far from Vyazma and the hero city of Smolensk, the place of decisive battles in the first year of the Great Patriotic War. After an overnight stay in a camp on the airfield of Staraya Russa, the participants started a more difficult stage of about 750 km long with two high-speed stages named Valdai Lake and Bear Path. They were divided by a road network a neutralization area. The first stage of 105 km long was a very fast one, with wide roads which then narrow and lead to a forest. Then the pilots faced a cross-country, sometimes sandy and with a deep rut. The second part of the route was 68 km of a very fast track. Then, after a connection of 250 km long, the participants came to a camp on the airfield of Vyazma. Four jeeps of Volkswagen teem headed the overall standings. Spaniard Carlos Sainz showed the best result having left behind Qatari Nasser al Attiyah. The success of the crew with pilot Edward Nikolaev on KAMAZ opened a new page in the category of trucks and in the history of the KAMAZ-master team. This trio gained their first victory on the stages of the Dakar series races having come 30 seconds before Firdaus Kabirovs crew. This year 26-year-old Nikolaev has already declared himself at the Championship of Russia having won a stage of the Khazar Steppes Race. Vladimir Chagins crew showed the third result that day. Leads between the leaders are minimal. Ilghizar Mardeevs trio came sixth to the finish of the stage, just after Austrian Franz Echter and Czech Ales Loprais. Mardeev is an experienced racing driver, and he knows that the strongest quality in long races is stability. Andery Karginov was the seventh, and Ayrat Mardeev was the twelfth. Andrey Leontiev also came to the finish successfully, soon after his rivals. Now the racers will face a more serious distance. The third stage named A Beautiful Dream makes 215 of high-speed kilometers.
